Pedal Norfolk Cycle Festival

Three days of amazing cycling for all the family at Holkham during Bank Holiday weekend. We are here at the start of day one and are just about to see the first group of cyclists set off on the 100 mile route. We welcome Olympic silver medalist Emma Pooley who has joined us for the three days.

It's "Snow Business"!

Gloucester company Snow Business have been helping us create the magical effect of fallen snow in our children's Christmas grotto and in our winter wonderland in the hall.

Walled Gardens Restoration Project

On a sunny day in November it's busy in the Walled Gardens at Holkham.We've encouraged teams of workers from other departments to help the gardeners. Here are the game department, customer service and education teams, as well of some of our brilliant volunteers eagerly working away in one of the areas in the 6.5 acres of gardens. Plenty more to do team!

New cattle on the farm

The farm has taken delivery of a twenty one Belted Galloway cattle that arrived last weekend. The cattle get their name from the distinct cream band around their girth. They will soon be grazing in Holkham park and on the National Nature Reserve.

Biomass project for the hall

Our new biomass boilers are being installed ready to provide the central heating in the hall for the winter. Here is the large machinery, which, with 500 BHP powering the cutters, the machine is able to process wood chip at a rate of 30 cubic metres an hour.

Fuel for the biomass boilers

Here's the end result of the wood chipping process. We aim to get 1,000 cubic metres to burn. All of the wood used is from a sustainable source on the estate.

Open Farm Sunday

Farming on a grand scale - Open Farm Sunday has been great fun, and we all learnt quite a lot about modern farming too.

Pedal Norfolk 2013

The inaugural Pedal Norfolk Cycling Festival at Holkham from 4-6 May was a great success, with hundreds of people participating over the 3 days.

Easter at the Hall

Branston the Butler has plenty of trainees today. Young Maisie and her brother were keen to listen and learn how to lay the table for a grand dinner and promised not to try this at home!

Thank you to Wells Primary School pupils who visited Holkham today to try out our new Woodland Adventure Play Area. It was great to see you the children having so much fun.

Glamour & Gowns

Our exhibition in the hall this season charts the path of British fashion over the last 50 years.


"Glamour & Gowns - Couture by Belinda Bellville and Bellville Sassoon" will give a fascinating insight into the career of Belinda Bellville, society dressmaker and Viscountess Coke's mother, who is world renowned for her stylish designs and as co-founder of Britain's foremost couture label Bellville Sassoon.

The exhibition can be viewed in Holkham Hall from 12-4pm on Sunday, Monday and Thursday from 25th March to 31st October. Click here for more information.

We're in the Marble Hall with Jill Bennet from BBC Radio Norfolk who visited us today (Friday 7th December) to interview some of our team who are preparing the hall for Christmas. The interview was aired on the early evening programme (5pm to 6pm).

Preparing for our second Christmas weekend

We're busy once again preparing the states rooms for this weekend's Christmas Celebrations. All of the greenery used for decorating the state rooms is being refreshed - once again a mammoth task, but looking spectacular already!

Only 24 hours to go!

Finishing touches are being made and the clearing up begins. It's just 24 hours before we open for Christmas. Here's a sneak preview of the massive Christmas tree in the Saloon.

Christmas preparations continue

With just four more days before we open for Christmas, it's a hive of activity in the hall. Some of the rooms are now complete and looking stunning!

We are certainly thinking of different ways to decorate the hall and the antlers cast by our deer have given us inspiration! Mark Taylor has put this unusual Christmas tree together - a great creation.

We’ve taken delivery of some of the Christmas trees which will be used to decorate the hall. The scent is amazing.

Preparing again for Christmas

The first day of preparing the hall for Christmas 2012! Our thanks to Easton College, Norwich for helping us dress the mantelpieces in the state rooms – everything is starting to take shape.

September Plant Fair

Plant nurseries from across East Anglia came together in September for a two-day plant fair hosted in the Walled Gardens at Holkham. As well as plants for sale, there was a variety of artisan stalls with hand-forged metalwork, honey and bee products, local beers and delicious chilli sauces.

Open Farm Day

On Sunday 17th June 2012 Farm Day at Holkham gave visitors a chance to discover modern and Victorian farming on a great estate.

The north lawn of Holkham Park was transformed with displays of combines, tractors, large sprayers, pens of cattle and calves and displays of sheep shearing. Trailer rides took keen visitors around the park to show them more of the farming operation on the estate. Whilst in the Bygones Museum visitors had a chance to step back in time to Victorian times and learn from history with a host of characters with the poacher, baker, kitchen maid and cooks, blacksmith, equine expert all dressed in period costume bringing the past to life.

Jubilee Celebrations

A fun time was had as Holkham celebrated the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Over three days of 1950s fun, fashion and food, Rock 'n' Roll and some celebrity film stars made the celebrations a time to remember.

It’s a hive of activity as we prepare for the Jubilee celebrations at Holkham, here we are putting up our massive union jack bow outside the hall.

Victorian Cookery

During the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, the Old Kitchen in the Hall was brought to life with characters from Holkham's past. Visitors watched the preparation of jellies and ice creams, water ices and marzipan fruits and had a chance to learn about the food and the ingredients popular during the Victorian era.

Our Second Christmas Weekend 2011

Take a glimpse of our Victorian Celebrations in the hall as we welcomed Her Majesty Queen Victoria to stay. Costumed characters, rooms bedecked in yuletide splendour and plenty of festive fun was had by all. What fond memories this video will bring for many of our visitors.

Our First Christmas Weekend 2011

As we waited to open the doors to our visitors, here is a glimpse of our first Christmas weekend at Holkham. The state rooms looking magnificent dressed for the festive season, whilst the Victorian Fayre in the courtyard was a hive of activity with costumed traders, music and carol singing.
