‘A Portrait of Place’: Contemporary Craft Inspired by Holkham’s Past and Present
August 26, 2021 | Events | 3 minute read
Earlier this year, Holkham welcomed five makers from The New Craftsmen on a residency to explore and respond to the estate’s history, culture and style. The makers – Alfred Newall, Arjan Van Dal, James Rigler, Laura Carlin Colays at Holkham, discovering and gaining inspiration from the elegant rooms of the hall, the sweeping landscapes, the values of Holkham’s characters and experts and its history, present and aims for the future.
The New Craftsmen commissioned the five makers to interpret their experience of Holkham through their craft. From lighting and furniture to mirrors and decorative statements, these unique pieces will be on display at Holkham Hall next month, in a special exhibition entitled ‘A Portrait of Place’.
Catherine Lock, Creative Director of The New Craftsmen, explains the story behind ‘A Portrait of Place’:
“Over the years, we have built close relationships with our makers; we are continually having invaluable discussions with them about their practice, business and creative ambitions, which is a central part of our role at The New Craftsmen. From these conversations and understanding their ambitions, we initiated the ‘Portrait of Place’ biennial project. The idea is to invite a small group of makers to take time away from their studios to immerse themselves creatively and intellectually in worlds that unlock a flurry of ideas and help fuel their imagination. During the residency, we encourage them to explore new – or push existing – techniques and design concepts.”
Seeing the Crafts
We are looking forward to seeing how the artisans will interpret and demonstrate the spirit of Holkham through their crafts. Each has a distinct style and medium, and their unique takes on Holkham following their residency will be of great interest. The artworks will be displayed in Holkham Hall from 9th to 13th September and can be viewed as part of a standard tour or as part of a more specialised and in-depth Portrait of Place Tour on Thursday 9th, Sunday 12th or Monday 13th September.
