The Victoria’s 2024 WONDER wins
December 19, 2024 | The Victoria | 3 minute read
If you have stayed with us this year you may have noticed some subtle changes which are helping to reduce our environmental impact and achieve our WONDER goals.
Anca, our Head Housekeeper, explains, “We have installed new bins in our rooms to help our guests separate their waste as well as better signage on the bins in our car parks. We’ve tested a new cleaning product which will be rolled out next year — this will remove a lot of single use plastic and chemicals from our housekeeping team whilst still maintaining our spotless standards.”
Other changes include moving over to a refillable water system for the bedrooms, reducing our glass recycling waste by an amazing 10,000 bottles a year, working with ethical companies such as LemonAid, and swapping out single-use plastics for more sustainable options — for example, changing our plastic cleaning gloves and piping bags for compostable and reusable equivalents.
We asked our guests for suggestions of what else we could do and one of them was to install some water butts to capture the rainwater from the roof which we use to water the flowers with.
Capturing the story of the work we do on sustainability is an ongoing project and something we do through providing a food map on the back of our menu, highlighting all the local suppliers that help make our dishes fresh and delicious. Our drinks menus also feature some supplier stories that help to bring to life the important work they do, and how we contribute by purchasing their products.
Sue Penlington, our Sustainability Manager, picks out her highlight of the year:
“One of the best things about The Vic in the winter is the warmth and cosiness of the open fire, particularly after a walk on the beach. I challenged the team with how we could retain this feature but with a reduced environmental impact and the team rose to the challenge. They have sourced a more sustainable form of coal made using recycled olive stones. This, along with the recycled paper and estate-grown firewood is a great solution without detracting from our guest experience.”
