Curtis Austin
Forester
My day to day work in the forestry department can vary from carrying out thinning and clear-fell work with chainsaws, to using some of our machines to assist the others foresters with felling. During the winter we are focussing on planting which comprises many steps such as staking, making holes, tree selection, planting and tubing which you may have spotted throughout the estate.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a career in forestry?
The advice that I would give someone is that you need to love what you do. We can teach people how to use a chainsaw and the skills you need for the job, but we can’t teach the passion for it. When it’s raining and you’re out dealing with wind blown trees that need clearing, or out planting and it’s only a couple degrees above freezing – that’s when you need to love what you do.
Tell us about your time at Holkham.
I have been a part of the forestry department for about three years now. For the first 12-18 months I undertook the trainee program that Head Forester, Harry, and Forester, Jim, created which taught much of the skills and knowledge needed for the job; this included felling, processing, learning the Latin names of trees and much more. Since then I have been a fully qualified forester on the estate.
Do you have a Holkham highlight?
In September 2024, the forestry team went on a ‘Go See’ trip to the APF Forestry Show at Ragley Estate. The idea of a ‘Go See’ is to scope out new ideas, best practices, and gain inspiration to bring back to implement in our own department. During this trip we were able to see all the latest machines and ideas that are dominating the forestry world. We also stopped at Belvoir Castle and Sherwood Forest on the way back to study the woodland and trees. This was a great team building day and an opportunity to see different forestry work.
