Gavin Chapman
General Builder
Before joining Holkham as a general builder, I worked for a family business for 19 years where my Grandad and Uncle taught me everything I needed to know to build a house from footing to finish. Together we constructed anything from new builds and barn conversions to renovations and more.
Now, as a qualified builder I relish the opportunity to pass my skills onto the next generation.
What does a typical day look like for you?
We usually begin the day with a team meeting before heading off into homes, where I plan my work around the tenants. You never know from one day to the next where the job will take you. I could be up on someone’s roof one day and doing a dry repair on someone’s wall the next.
What makes Holkham a great place to work?
I find all Holkham staff from around the estate so welcoming, kind and friendly. I love my role and my team, I get to see so many different parts of the estate.
Can you describe a stand out moment during your time at Holkham?
For me, it has to be the Holkham Christmas party or staff fireworks night. Both events round off the year brilliantly and mark the start of a new year to come. I see them as a big thank you from Holkham and Lord Leicester for all the hard work we’ve put in over the year.
What are you most proud of at work?
For me, it is each time I go to a tenant’s house and it’s clear I have made them happy with the work I’ve carried out. It’s extra rewarding when the tenant calls the office to pass on their thanks.
Have you participated in any initiatives run by Holkham?
Yes, all staff members are given paid volunteering leave to help the local community. The team and I helped fit the kitchen in Little Gillies – a local day care centre in Wells.
